La Havana, Miguel Pelegrino, Cuba, 2012

From May 7th to July 12th, 2013 the NYC-based Bryce Wolkowitz Gallery will inaugurate an exhibition entitled The Wrinkles of the City with the recent collaboration between French-born photographer JR and Cuban-born artist José Parlá.

In The Wrinkles of the City, both artists photographed and interviewed dozens of senior citizens in Havana who lived through the Cuban revolution, fly-posting colossal b&w portraits of their subjects on the walls of city buildings.

JR's was initially launched in Cartagena, Spain and has continued in cities such as Shanghai, Los Angeles, and last year in Cuba commissioned for the 11th Havana Biennial.

This exhibition in Manhattan will consist of twelve large portraits along with a site-specific installation that includes a film projection based on a book with the same name The Wrinkles of the City published by Damiani/Standard Press.

A documentary film about JR's Inside Out, a global art project providing people the opportunity to share their portrait and a statement of what they stand for, will be showing at the 2013 Tribeca Film Festival.

On the other hand, Brooklyn-based José Parlá whose paintings that lie at the boundary between abstract marking and calligraphy, has received critical acclaim for his work.

In January 2013, he was  commissioned by the Brooklyn Barclays Center and last year by the Brooklyn Academy of Music.
