Tonight, Monday May 6th, 2013 at 9PM ET, WPBT Channel 2, South Florida Public Television will premiere West Encounters East , a documentary that will take viewers on a journey to Brazil to uncover a vibrant culture and unique art world focusing on a little-known population: the Japanese Brazilians.
Produced by Linda Corley, the documentary features Japanese Brazilians artists such as Tomoo Handa, Tomie Ohtake, Manabu Mabe, Tikashi Fukushima, Yutaka Toyota, Flavio-Shiró, Takashi Fukushima, Kazuo Okubo, Jum Nakao and Catarina Gushiken, who among others share their experiences of being among the largest ethnic Japanese community outside of Japan.
Last week, Stella Holmes, Executive Producer for West Encounters East and the Lowe Art Museum co-hosted a premiere event for this anticipated debut where more than 200 guests watched the trailer from the film and listened an informative discussion between Cornell University Professor Pedro Erber and Takashi Fukushima whose father was one of the founding members of the Japanese-Brazilian art movement in São Paulo.
Among dignitaries in attendance at the Lowe were Ambassador Hélio Vitor Ramos, Consul General of Brazil, Eiichi Kawahara, Consul General of Japan, representatives of 15 other consulates, and City of Miami Mayor Tomás Regalado.
